The Woode Family

“It‘s a small world” - Whilst researching a vicar call Wilfred Woode from a village called Sculthorpe near Fakenham, I found his father who was Charles Edward Woode, who was at one time the rector of Fersfield! Further research led to a tragic accident that happened at the Bircham Newton airfield in 1925. So developed a story of a family involved in the church and also the armed services. Below are the facts and events related to the Fersfield rector, his wife, and their 5 children .....

On Sunday the new vicar of Swaffham, the Rev. F. Keeling Scott (late of Fersfield), read himself in at the morning service, and preached at the evening service to a very large congregation.

CLERICAL. - On Tuesday last, at the Palace, Norwich, the Rev.Charles Edward Woode, B.A. (for many years Rector of Fersfield), was collated and instituted by the Bishop of Norwich to the Rectory of Burgh Parva with the Vicarage and Parish Church of Briston annexed. The living is in the gift of the Bishop for this turn by reason of lapse.

THE REV. C. E. WOODE
(BRISTON WITH BURGH PARVA)

The death occurred on Monday at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital of the Rev. Charles Edward Woode. Mr. Woode, who was Vicar of Briston with Burgh Parva, had spent some years at Fersfield, moving there in 1908. He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and took an honours degree in Classics. He was ordained deacon at St. Albans in 1901 and was made a priest the following year. He held curacies at Colchester and Harrow-on-the-Hill, before he came to Fersfield he was curate of Attleborough. He has been Vicar of Briston since 1928.
Mr. Woode had been fond of cricket and lawn tennis. He leaves three sons and a daughter. He survived his wife by seven months.
The funeral service, held at Fersfield Parish Church on Thursday, was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. T. E. Hopkins. The Bishop of Thetford (the Rev. P. Woodhouse) took the commital. Mr. G. P. Parnell, the organist of Briston (who also represented Briston Primary School scholars and staff), was the organist for the hymn “Nearer my God to Thee” and the 23rd Psalm.
The family mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. Meredith Woode, son and daughter-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Brereton, daughter and son-in-law; Mr. John Woode and Mr. Gerald Woode, grandsons.
The Rev. Derek Woode and Mr. G. I. Woode (sons) and Mrs. B. Woode (sisters-in-law) were unable to be present.

There were many beautiful floral tributes from friends and members of the family and from the Church and parishioners of All Saints’, Briston, the managers, staff and scholars of Briston Primary School, and the Parochial Church Council and parishioners of Burgh Parva.
